Our country is currently in the throws of load shedding , thanks to bad planning by our government our lives are now in a constant upheaval.

Today you might have electricity all day and tomorrow it may be off anything up to 4 hrs depending on where you live. This makes life a virtual nightmare when it comes to planning meal times and the unexpected power cuts ... enter the Woody Woodcooker!
Local resident Darin Sacker has come up with the perfect solution. He has developed a wood burning oven with a heat-efficient design that will allow you to cook a range of dishes, from pizza to roasts and casseroles. You can even use it to bake cakes and grill fish.

Sacker has perfected his unique, handcrafted ovens over the past 25 years, and is proud to say that he has never had an oven returned during that time.
“Our relationship with our clients is important to us. That value is reflected in all the stages of building the oven to delivering and installing it,” says Sacker, who is so set on his clients having a good time that for larger parties he comes back to make their pizza on their premises. He also provides training and mouth-watering recipes with every new installation.

The glowing fire and woody flavours create a unique atmosphere for entertaining guests, when electricity is expensive or during load shedding hours.
Unlike a traditional wood cooker, Sacker’s ovens are designed to retain and store the heat, so it is not necessary to have a fire burning at all times. The high quality refractory cement and fire bricks retain the heat for slow cooking stews, long after the intense heat needed for pizza has abated.

Although cooking pizza is just one of the uses for the wood cooker, last week during the worst Cape Storm and braving the torrential rain we got to partake of the most delicious Hors De Oeuvres proof of just how versatile this oven is.

As below:
- Endive , Avocado and Smoked Mackerel
- Roast Fillet , Onion and Garlic Toasts

These were delicious alternatives to the traditional pizza, however it does bear mentioning that the pizza was out of this world!
Sacker’s company, Woody Woodcooker, is well known for its pizza parties, for adults and/or children.

“I enjoy the challenge of catering for 21sts or other big parties,” he says. “We’ve had as many as 200 guests enjoying a constant stream of fresh, hot pizza from the mobile oven.”

“Our wood cookers can be found in homes and restaurants in South Africa, Zanzibar and the Seychelles,” he says. “Some of our clients are bakers, and others are start-ups or established catering businesses.”

I was amazed to hear that the oven reaches a temperature of up to 500'c and that the average pizza of 26cm diameter takes a mere 90 seconds to cook ...yikes!
