I recently got invited to attend a fabulous comparative wine tasting or food and wine pairing event, hosted at the fabulous Protea Hotel Fire and Ice Cape Town (read my review here).

The wines featured at this comparative tasting were to be from a quaint set of vineyards set almost at the southernmost point in South Africa in a little Town called Agulhas.

What's incredibly unique about this area is the constant cool temperatures thanks to it be a coastal region with many fresh sea breezes.
Another incredibly unique trait of this wine farm is the fact that it has not 1 but 6 single vineyard wines , meaning that the harvest from these vineyards are not blended at all but rather are made purely from  vineyard and one variety of grape and are registered to be as such.

The unique single vineyard wines are named of Cape Fynbos flowers such as Snowbush and Pincushion as testimony to the unique Fynbos found in this region.
The table was set in the open dining style in the entrance area at the Protea Fire and Ice Hotel , as the guests arrived we were greeted with a glass of champagne which got us all relaxed and in the mood for a fabulous five course feast ...

The first course pairing :
The Food:
Amuse bouche of basil , asparagus , zucchini and parmesan terrine

The Wine:
Lomond Estate Sauvignon Blanc
Delicate aromas of green pepper and tropical fruit with herbaceous undertones. Fresh and medium-bodied with a delicate minerality, while the green and tropical fruit flavours carry through onto the palate.
** I absolutely adored this wine, on my palate it had an undertone of what seemed like passion fruit coming through , it was light crisp and a fabulous drinking wine.
Retails at R54.42 incl. VAT/ 750ml bottle

The second course pairing:
The Food:
Lime crumbed chicken breast on goat's cheese, fig and orange baked phyllo parcel

The Wine:
Lomond Sugarbush Sauvignon Blanc
Intense citrus and asparagus with flinty minerality that carries through onto palate. Elegant, with great length on palate.
** I found this wine to be great in balancing the sweetness of this dish , it also cleanses the palate beautifully and leaves a fresh fruity taste in the mouth.
Retails at R100.24 Incl. VAT / 750ml bottle

The third course pairing:
The Food:
Grilled Tuna Fillet, wasabi mayo drops , oyster topping with guava jelly star

The Wine:
Lomond Pincushion Sauvignon Blanc
Delicate aromas of citrus, pineapple and a mix of tropical fruits. Richer and fuller palate, but still with a fresh acidity that provides great balance and length.** I enjoyed this wine but found it a little drier on the palate than the other two , great for those who prefer a little more substance to their white wine.
Retails at R100.24 Incl. VAT / 750ml bottle

The fourth pairing:
The Food:
Shanghai mixed spiced duck carpaccio, rocket, nutty grilled coconut mango , cherry salad and gluhwein syrup

The Wine:
Lomond Pinot Noir
Ripe cherries, five star spice with complex forest floor aromas, delicate soft tannin structure with lovely balance.
** Goodness me, I absolutely adored this red , it's light (as far as reds go) , it's soft on the palette and an easy drinking wine with a full bodied taste. We were also privileged, this was the first unveiling of the Pinot Noir 2013 and I promise you it is amazing!
Retails for R105.67 / 750ml bottle

The grand finale ....
The Food:
Decadent gold dusted dark chilli Lindt tart , drizzled with strawberries

The Wine:
Lomond Syrah
Rich berry and spice character, full bodied but still fine tannin structure. Floral and white pepper aromas carry through to palate.
** This is my type of go to wine for winter , the fireplace and good company. It is full bodied all the way with a slightly woody aftertaste , but absolutely delicious!
Retails for R73.17 Incl. VAT / 750ml bottle

It was truly such an amazing evening with great company at our very long table, and Wim the winemaster from Bergkelder who also makes the wines for Lomond Wines, was super passionate and informative about this unique wine farm and the wonderful wines harvested from this region.
I know that this evening will be with me for a long time and I am really praying it will be the first of many.

Thank you to the Protea Fire and Ice Hotel Cape Town who served superb food with a fabulous smile as always and to Lomond Wines for an exceptional tasting.
