MEET BEV MISSING OF RAIN (AFRICA)

Please share a little about yourself and what inspired you to create this brand?
In 1999 unemployment and crime were rising in Ladybrand, and I wanted to make a difference in the lives of the poor and jobless. I decided to start making soap as it is labour intensive and all the lovely soap was imported at that stage, so there was a gap in the market.

How would you describe your brand in a nutshell?
At Rain we formulate and create body and bathcare products with wild harvested African botanical actives. We create jobs for unskilled people, we spread love and laughter. We like to believe that we give hope and make a difference

What would you consider to be unique about your brand?
Our passion for quality sets us apart as well as our passion for people and the environment. We are the only Beauty product company that is fully Fair Trade and Beauty Without Cruelty accredited. What I mean by “fully Fairtrade” is that the whole company is regulated by the international Fair Trade body, not just some ingredients.. all ingredients.

How many stores/branches do you have and where are they located?
We have 8 South African Stores in Cape Town, Swellendam, Somerset West, George, Durban and Jo’burg. Then we have a store in the Rockefeller Plaza in New York and another store opening in New York in December. We also have 2 unique Spa concepts, one in Swellendam and one in Cavendish in Cape Town.

What ‘piece of advice’ would you most like to share with people considering a start -up business?
Start at the bottom. You need 100% passion, 100% guts and a total belief in your vision and your determination to succeed. Be prepared to put in crazy work hours and all kinds of sacrifices, but most important.. NEVER GIVE UP.

The challenge as a business is to stay authentic and true to your brand, how do you achieve this?By having formalized mission statements, clear vision and company ethos and by revisiting our values each time we make critical direction altering decisions

What do you love most about being an entrepreneur?
The freedom to create and the freedom to make the decisions. The company is in my hands, my team are in my hands. I can make them happy or miserable. Maybe it is a power thing ??or the ability to EM power

What has your journey so far taught you {about yourself or in general}? Has it changed your life in any way?
It taught me humility as nothing has been easy. Taught me to pray about everything and to trust GOD in ALL things as He knows what is best for us

How does the future look as far as ‘dreams and visions’ for your brand?

Our dreams and visions of 15 years ago are coming to fruition as we have signed these two huge contracts to open 70 Rain stores in the USA and Canada and then 40 in the UK and Ireland. It is a dream come true to see a tiny garage soap making business being given the opportunity to play on the global stage as an international brand
